I am a descendant of Stephen H. and Nancy Hainey Harper of Edgecombe County, NC. They were my great grandparents who were born in this County. The area where the Harper ancestors settled has this documentation: 4, 1791 =============================================================== DOCUMENTATION FOR DAVID HARPER AND MARY HARPER (DORMAN)'S MARRIAGE CONNECTION: EDGECOMBE COUNTY: ROBERT HARPER, an orphan 1769 “ROBERT HARPER orphan of DAVID HARPER dec. age 15 years last March is ordered to be bound apprentice to Thomas Loury until he be nineteen years of age to learn the art of a Carpenter & House Joiner.” (This means this ROBERT HARPER was born March 1769 based on age 15 – 1784, the year his father died.) EDGECOMBE COUNTY: REUBEN HARPER, an orphan 1788 Source: Edgecombe County Abstracts of Court Minutes, 1757-94 Book II: DAVID HARPER, dec’d 1784, father of: 3. REUBEN; chose William Batchelor as his guardian (Nov. 4, 1788). (He could have lived with his mother after the death of his father, between 1784-1788. William Batchelor married Reuben Harper's sister, Mary Harper.) EDGECOMBE COUNTY: JAMES HARPER, the orphan 1767 Source: Edgecombe County, North Carolina Court Minutes, 1775-1785, Book III, No. 261 dated May 1784: JAMES HARPER aged 17 last February orphan of DAVID HARPER dec is ordered to be bound apprentice to Thomas Loury until he be 20 (sic) years of age to learn the art of a Carpenter & House Joyner.” (This means this JAMES HARPER was born February, 1767.; age 17- 1784) MARY HARPER DORMAN'S WILL 1801 Edgecombe County Will Abstracts 1793-1823, Vol II, page 31:(131) Mary (X) NORMAN 20 Feb 1796 May Ct 1801 D/125: Sons DAVID HARPER, ROBERT HARPER and REUBEN HARPER - bed each. Son JAMES HARPER - lend one bed for his lifetime with reversion to his son BANNISTER HARPER. Son REUBEN HARPER - one acre of land adjoining his own land, being the place where he now lives. Db 29, page 2, date of deed 17 Aug. 1782, date recorded 20 Feb. 1783, Mary Harper of Edgecombe Co., NC to David Harper and William Harper of county and state aforesaid, for L50, a tract of land containing 163 ˝ acres on the north side of Southern Branch and bounded by William Hartert, John Hartert and Matthew Manning, signed Mary Harper (+), wit. Benj. Dickens, William Batchelor, (Emal. Satchwell).
