Lovely site. My grandmother was born and lived in Dolton 1918. Her name was Dora Jenkins, had sister Lily and brother Fred. She went on to be a school teacher and I believe she taught brieftly at Dolton school. She married in the local church to William Bubear of Okehampton. I have visited Dolton when my nan was alive and she showed me the house where she lived etc.

My name is John Hancock, currently living in West Yorkshire. My Grandfather (Henry Hancock) was born in Dolton in 1858, leaving for London c. 1880. His father was Parish Clerk for 40 years and is buried in Dolton Churchyard.
My enquiry relates to the photograph of Brook Cottage dated 1904 that is sitting in the selection of old photos on this web site. I have in my possession exactly the same picture, an original print, mounted on card. The picture was taken by The Elm Studio, Merton, Devon.
However, a note written on the back of my photo states the names of the couple as Sarah & William Lethbridge and a date of c. 1880. Sarah would have been my Great Aunt.
The 1881 Census shows they were living in "The Square, Dolton". He was a wheelwright and she a dressmaker. So this raises a few questions:
1. Is the date correct at 1904?
2. Are the couple indeed Sarah & William Lethbridge?
3. If yes to the above, why did Sarah & William have their picture taken infront of a cottage in Dolton when the census returns show them living in Merton in 1891 & 1901?
Perhaps they moved back to Dolton by 1904. I may have to wait for the census returns of 1911 to become available but in the meantime, I hope someone may be able to shed some light for me.
As stated, I currently live in West Yorkshire but have visited Dolton a couple of times so the web site is a particularly interesting discovery for me. Thanks. Kind Regards.
John Hancock

I happened upon this website yesterday and the first thing I saw was a photograph with me in it!
I lived in Beaford as a child and when my parents moved to Cornwall I became a border with Miss Wadland for three, very happy years.
Last year I came and wandered around the core of the village, it seems timeless. I love it and will return.
