my heart honestly goes out to you. My previous husband and I went through a similar case back in 1999. We took in a teenage girl, with need I mention plenty of the psychological issues these children have. We knew she was using us as a way out of the group home, but we didnt have any idea how far she would go. She figured out if placement with us didnt work, she would be returned to her bio mother ( wow...every foster childs dream). Her first step was to call her mom and tell her our house was filthy, and the health department was cracking down on us. Well this was totally untrue, but it did get her mother to back her up none the less. A few weeks after the false report to her mother we were informed of complaints by her mother to our agency, and we were informed to just ignore them, that it was just a scheem for her to go home. Shortly after being told not to worry, we were told she had requested to be moved from our home, and that we were having sexual encounters with other couples! Apparently this came from a weekend visit we had from some out of state friends. Mind you they slept in their own beds, but naturally they believe this 15 year old girl before the other children in the home and us. 2 months later we finally were interviewed, and to my relief...Karen, the interviewer/investigator told me to not be concerned, it sounded to her like we had a pissed off teenager that just wanted to cause problems for us, and that so far she didnt see any reason why she should believe the accusiations. That was Nov. of 1999, and none of the other foster children were removed from the home before , during or after the investigation. Our agency informed us in January 2000 that the accusiation was unfounded...and they were going to place us on probation just as a precautionary issue, In March of 2000 the agency we were working for went under investigation by the state...not as a result of our investigation, but some other complaints. We were then informed that the agency was going to revoke our license...as to cover their butts. They said they didnt need any more questions brought up regarding other foster homes. I was in the middle of a divorce at the time, and because of added stress from that, I chose not to appeal the decision. I am now remaried and have spent the past 3 years, with my new husband trying to get relicensed...I have always made it a point to be honest about the allegations against us in the past, and as a result of my honesty...everyone has refused to license us. You see...as a turn of events. The couple we were accused of having sex with back in 1998, well they divorced as well, and a few years later he and I were married. Now everyone says that if I was accused of sleeping with him in 98, and was married to him now, then that is proof that the foster child was telling the truth. This sickens me. He was married to my best friend at the time, and there was absolutely nothing between us at the time. But like with you, we are guilty and must prove ourself innocent. Mind you...The agency I was licensed with when this all happened has agreed to re hire us. The state of Colorado never took our license, it was solely a choice made by our private agency. My choice not to return to that agency was based on the age of the children they place, (only teens) we have a preference of elementary children, same as my biological children. We finally found an agency in another county willing to license us, however it wasnt easy getting it all done. We told the agency everything...and naturally they had to get all the reports. The Jacob Center (previous placement agency) recommended us, and didnt see a problem with licensing us. Then the county reports...Well the woman who handed the reports to the licensing agent, told him she wouldnt recommend licensing us. However he said there was nothing in the report that recommended us not being licensed, just one womans opinion? Thank god the agency we are with now was able to go beyond what people had said and actually review all the reports. I am happy to say, we have finally finished the licensing process, and are anxiously awaiting children. No, we arent crazy, and yes we do know how accusations and investigations go, however it is a risk we are willing to take in order to possible help one child! The joy in knowing you can be there for a child so greatly outweighs the pain of being wrongfully accused. As for the girl who caused all the problems...well, I ran into her for the first time about a month ago...She is about 8 months pregnant, homeless, and living in a car with her older - abusive boyfriend. She apologized for the problems she had caused for us, and explained she just wanted to go home. Because she had been placed in the foster care system by her mother she knew if it didnt work then her would allow her to return home. Well she got what she wanted, and need I say more?

I Strongly believe that all agencies, both public and private must be required by law to change the way allegations of abuse and neglect are handled.

I just finished reading the account of your horrorific encounter with foster care. My husband and I were foster parents for six years until his illness forced us to cease. During those six years, I know the same thing could have happened to us. It was only through the grace of God we were spared. I know how disturbed these children can be. I have just purchased a computer and I am researching foster care whereever I can. I am working on a book I hope will expose the facts that the media, apparantly is not willing to deal with. The foster parents of this country have been overlooked long enough!

There have been false allegations made against and the two children we were in the process of adopting have been taken away from and we have been told we might be able to adopt and our home may be closed. I have wanted to be a foster parent all my adult life and now the opportunity has presented itself and someone can come along and take that away from us.
