I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to find your sight, in particular since you have posted an image of the exact same lithograph I have hanging on my wall (Carton's ascent to the guillotine). I found that little treasure in a local antique store and it made me do a double take, because the image was one I remember seeing long ago. Needless to say I bought the picture, which at that time was framed in a wood frame that revealed SQUARE nails and a copy of Carton's soliloquoy (t'is a far far better thing) pasted on the back.)
So I am writing this in the hope that you perhaps know the history of this image better than me. All I have been able to find out about it is that a man named Frederick Barnard drew it for a book of character sketches for Dickens. But how valuable and rare (or common) this lithograph is, I don't know. Any extra info you can pass along would be greatly appreciated.
Two Cities has been MY ultimate favorite (it competes with Tolkien's "The Hobbit" on my top ten list) since I read it in 9th grade (beginning of the 80s). I read it every summer since then, but had not thought about it since starting college and graduating and getting married...until that day I walked through the antique store. Would you believe that when I went to go buy a new copy for myself, the exact same image was on the front of the book?
Anyway, I am thrilled that you have this website. What did you think of the Masterpiece Theatre version of it with James Wilby as Sydney Carton?
best regards,
Sharon
