As a grown preemie now in her mid twenties, I am thrilled that sites like this exist to give hope and support to parents of preemies. And parents, trust me, as a former NICU survivor born at 27 weeks with a twin brother who also survived the NICU, I am a walking testimonal that preemies and miracles seem to go hand in hand. To look at me or my brother today you wouldn't know that I weighed 3 lbs. 10oz. when I was born and spent 2 months in an isolet with multiple chest tubes helping me to breath. What I want to know however is why there is such a lack of information, of research, of long term studies done of the effects of prematurity on neurology and development. Almost everything I have seen is semi-anecdotal and geared more to telling parents what to expect than to help a developping preemie to understand the ramifications of their early appearance in the world. I suppose this could be because so few preemies survive from before the 1970s, the other seems to be a preponderant obsession with what caused these preemies to be born early (don't misunderstand me, I am all for research to prevent premature birth but for me prematurity is a done deal). And what I really, really want to know is why I read an article from a source printed in April 2006, stating that doctors have now proven that it is highly likely that preemies in the NICU DO feel genuine pain. Dear God, had there ever been a doubt? But if I watch the silent videos that my parents shot of my brother and I in the weeks following our birth, and look at our heels blacken from constent heel lancets used to take blood, the restraints that kept me naked, on my back under the oxygen device from which I gasped for air and the hard bright lights that flooded the isolets, I can begin to believe it. I know that practices in the NICUs have changed over the years and I truly believe that the doctors and nurses that care for preemies are miracle workers but I wish with all my heart that someone, somewhere would do the research, long-term research into the life long condition of prematurity, so that not only may it help older preemies such as myself but younger preemies, those still under ten years old and those extremely low birth weight preemies born as early as 18 weeks. We come with an amazing tenacity to live and some remarkable gifts but we also carry with us some very mysterious physical, cognitive and emotional issues that need to be studied. If anyone knows of any such research I would love to hear about it!

Looks like a beautiful facility, I know how rough it can be starting from scratch. Look here central I have done it twice in my life and if I ever do it again it will be for my own use only, not the publics, but for now it helps to pay the bills.
