hi all....my son was born on the 16.04.99 @28wks getsation weighing 1045 grms (2lb 5). We have had a hard 3 yrs with his health but thankfully we are over the worst. like many of you would know, the immune system would be very fragile there fore he is prone to a lot of viral infections (which he has at th mo). he had rds and bpd, bilingual hernias, grommets in, adneoids out and an anal stretch ( has suffered with chronic constipation ). he goes to creche full time and loves being with his friends as he is an only child. at present he is attending a physcologist to assess where he is developmentally but we are sure there are no problems. he stills melts my heart every day and a wk ago he told me for the first time that he loved me...so parents of premmies, they are our little angels sent from god for us to look after cos he knows we will do a great job. enjoy them and love them and let them mature and develop in their own time, no child is the same that whats them extra special...

Hi all you fellow preemie parents! I just love this website. I feel so blessed to be the parent of a miracle! Oct 23, 2001 my little angel (#6) was born at 33 wks. I wes on complete bedrest for 3 wks due to IUGR. I went in for a utrasound to find out she was not growing and must be born. She came out breathing on her own, she never needed oxegen or any other medical intervention. She weighed in at 2lb 13 oz. 1289 grams. She spent 4.5 wks in the most wonderful NICU. Now at 6.5 mo she is 11.lbs 6 oz. She is so cute! God bless all you parents!

This is my story: Miracles still happen.
08 December 2000 I wasn't feeling good, actually I wasn't feeling well from Wednesday the 6th of December but I thought I was to busy at home and just had to take it slow other than that I was a healthy pregnant mom. On Friday around 12h00 I asked my boss to go to the doctor and at long last I could leave. The doctor self was in a bit of a hurry but saw me. I was dilated 1cm when I saw her at 13h00. She send me home with bedrest, medication, an injection and what have you. Later that night around 2:30 the morning I couldn't take it anymore and my husband took me to hospital and I was dilated 4cm and in labour. The hospital wasn't ready for a premature delivery and I was rushed to Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein. There at 5:10 my babyboy Gilbert Miles Meyer was born. He was born at 28 weeks and at 1015kg and 31cm lenght. An indication of how tiny he was on Christmas day (15 days later) my husband's wedding ring fit around his foot up to his ancle.
Little Gilbert was in hospital for more than 3 and a half months. His lungs were unerdeveloped. He was diagnosed with Haylene membrane disease Gr. III and that was very serous. He was ventilated for more than 30 days and on oxygen for the whole period that he was in hospital. In NICU he developed an virus that was life threatening if it spread through his tiny body.
For the time that he was in the NICU I was'nt priveleged to be with my baby day and night. I had to go visit him during visiting hours only.
He was so sick that sometimes we didn't know what to expect.
He went through a couple of tests like CT brain and Xrays to see what the ventilation did to him. The CT of the brain showed that there was a decline in his brain the part that had to do with his vision, hearing and neurological growth. Before I went back to work I insited that a CT of the brain had to be done. I can only say that Thank God everything was normal.
He went for test for his eyes (because of the ventilation) he almost had problems with his (R) eye and he was "saved" in time with laser therapy. After a month we had to go back to the doctor and he was very satisfied. Now we only have to go back when Gilbert is 3 years old.
I just want to say that it was prayer that got little Gilbert through that time and still getting through his sick times.
Thank God he is a lovely small baby boy almost 17months and 9.86kg.
Please don't let anybody tell you that Miracles don't happen in our modern world.
From a very thankful Mom Tanya.
