We sort of love raccoons, but we have at least one family that comes down almost every night from a low mountain across the street. Problem is, we also provide food & water to several neighborhood cats who visit several times a day (we have 3, who stay inside). The raccoons, we fear, will chase and kill one or more of our visiting cat population, and we're trying to find how to get rid of the raccoons, short of shooting them. Nobody at Animal Welfare or the Humane Society will help and have no advice, either. I was first able to holler at them and they'd run away (the coons), but now they seem to get a huge kick and, once they've eaten all the cat food they just sit and snarl & smile. Can you give advice? I have recently rescued a baby raccoon from being put to sleep. His mom was hit by a car and the vet said they were considered pests in the city. I love my little coonie, his name is Alex and through a lot of trial and error and looking up things on the net my boy is now thriving. He went from skin and bones to now having a healthy gut on him. I was amazed at how much he was like a human child. He needed love and caresses just as much as food and water. He loves a bath and loved to be brushed. He purrs so loudly he sounds like a chain saw. When he does something he shouldn't I say Uh Uh and he bows his head and comes to me. When it is feeding time if he isn't right there I call eat eat and he comes running. I love my little guy and he has truly made me a great raccoon lover. They are not pests, they are homeless animals who are looking for food. We make them homeless by destroying their habitat and then have the nerve to call them pests. I wish everyone could experience the joy a raccoon can bring to your life. They are playful and loving and kind. They love to cuddle and be cuddled. If people in cities where deforestation is going on nearby would put food out for the raccoons they wouldn't bother their garbage at all. They get hurt and some die because of pesticides and chemicals that are mixed in with what they find to eat. If we continue to destroy their habitat then we should expect to at the very least put food out so they do not have to starve, or get into peoples garbage.
