In the book "Ohio Marriages", edited by
Marjorie Smith, published by Heritage
House and extract from "The Old
Northwest Genealogical Quarterly" says:
"1804 Jun 18 Boots, Martin & Eve
Arrahood by J. Gardner, JP, Ross Co."
"1805 Sep 1 Boots, Martin & Mary Odle by
J. Gardner, JP, Ross Co."
I believe Martin Boots (1777-1842) is
buried in the Boots cemetery, Marion,
Grant Co., Indiana. In the book "Lest We
Forget, Reminiscences of The Pioneers of
Grant County Indiana", Collected by
History Department of Marion High School
under the direction of Cora M. Straughn,
1921, unnumbered:
"Martin Boots who had a distillery and
sold whiskey at 10 cents a gallon;"
"The first marriage in the county was
that of Mr. and Mrs. John McCormick.
The second was that of Nelson Conner and
Sallie BOOTS, daughter of Martin BOOTS.
These were both in 1830, and as the
county was not organized at that time,
they had to go to Muncie to get their
license."
"Martin BOOTS and David Connor were the
first to enter land and settle in the
county. BOOTS bought what is now the
western part of Marion . . ."
"Mr. Eward remembers Martin BOOTS and
David Branson. BOOTS had a farm west of
town and had a little mill on Boots
creek near Third street. Branson owned
a farm east of the courthouse. He and
BOOTS deeded the land for the first
court house to the commissioners."
(First courthouse built ca. 1833)
In a webpage I can't seem to get back to
now I found the following:
"BOOTS CEMETERY"
"Martin Boots, the first white man to
enter land in Grant County - October
1825 - gave two acres of land this side
of the town for burial purposes."
The cemetery was later moved, not
without some controversy and damage to
graves and stones. The move gave rise
to a legend of ghosts at the school
which was then built on the old cemetery
site. Further on it gives dates for
Martin Boots - born 177 died 13 Sep.
1842 - and lists wife Julia (without
dates) who must have been his third
wife.
I am descended from Adam Boots (Hans
Adam Stieffel) through son Garrett Boots
who wed Elizabeth Peterson (daughter of
John or Hans Martin Peterson (Biedert)).
Their daugher Mary Boots wed Uriah Pace.
Daughter Elizabeth Pace wed John T.
Gray. Daughter Harriet Gray wed David
Wolverton, their daughter Mildred

Great web site. I'm researching McCabes. Looks like our McCabes were in the same place and time, but names did not match. Most likely some connection though. Alice McCabe
