Hello, everyone. How are you? It was the New Year on January 1. People travel somewhere or stay home etcc I stayed home and relaxed. In this connection, to stay home in the New Year calls gNESHOUGATSUh in Japan. In case like to sleep at sick call it, too. Though I stayed home, I had put on weight. I have to eat or to sleep in the New Year. So it is no wonder that it put on weight. It is same thing every year. I always to do diet, but I can not continue. I usually eat sweet. Not least I canft stop to eat chocolate. My friend said to me, gYou think you really want to lose weight, you can stop a lot of sweet.h But I canft stop to eat snack between meals. In truth, I start diet again. But I ate ice cream. It collapses this time, too.

Well, that's the question isn't it Duane, give or loan? When I went to university I didn't have to pay tuition fees and I also got a grant to help with living costs which was a 'gift' not a loan, I didn't have to repay it. I had it easy compared to these days. Now there are some grants and scholarships available, but it's much more expensive than it used to be. I think they have to contribute towards the tuition fees now too. So I can see why British students have been angry at the changes over recent years. I think a lot of people don't really value their education (at least not until later). But would they be more motivated if they had to pay more? I'm not sure that they would. A certain proportion of them would just give up and get a job instead.

Sorry for typos. It should be "If NZ student's appeal is not a hoax, she may fall a prey to malice,"

Hello, Happy New Year to everybody. In my days tuition for national university in Japan was about one eigth of that for private university. The gap has narrowed to one half these days. Most Japanese think university education belongs to the parents' responsibility and hence their purse. This is why I was impressed knowing many American students were working their way through colleges even their parents could afford to pay for education. The downside of our case is of course the lack of motivaton to study while students are unlikely to incur heavy debt. If the NZ student's appeal is not hoax, she nay fall a prey to some malice.

Jo - do you have scholarships in England? And, when you say should the government provide....do mean give or loan?

Hi Folks and Happy New Year.

I usually jump in and delete impersonal messages from users who copy the same messge over hundreds of message boards with no intention of actually joining in our discussion - but I'm afraid the recent festivities have made me a bit slow! Still, perhaps it has opened up an interesting line of discussion! Many students get seriously into debt during the course of their studies these days. Well, certainly in the UK. Is it true of Russia, Japan and other places? To what extent should students fund their own studies and to what extent should the government provide? What do you think?

Benly - I did not go to her web site. I don't usually open sites that I don't recognize. From your message, it sounds like she was asking for money. Maybe she could sell her computer???
