I'm John Wright Briggs, born in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1958. I'll be checking my files at home to confirm some of this, but I'm rather sure that: My grandmother, Sofia Reed, was closely related to the Sophia Brown Ladd mentioned on your WWW page. She was born about 1882 and married George Briggs in Taunton, Mass. My late father, born 1912, was Robert Hale Briggs. He retired as news editor of Taunton Daily Gazette. The Reed family had founded the paper many years earlier, and it remained a family business until the 1970s. My Dad had brothers Peter and George Wright Briggs. George Wright (who went by "Wright") was a well-known pianist and music educator in New England. Stories of our "uncle" Milton Reed, the one-time mayor of Fall River, were told frequently by my late father, and I have some of them on tape! By the way, there's an autobiography, "William Reed," available, as I recall, in the Fall River public library. My father Robert Hale Briggs married Ann Elizabeth Johnson (born 1922) and had three children, Bettina Ann Briggs, Robert Hale Briggs, Jr., and myself, John Wright Briggs (I was born in 1958). Our home was in Westport Point, Massachusetts. By the way, Herbert W. Ladd, mentioned on your WWW age, donated a major observatory to Brown University in 1891. It remains very active to this day (I've worked there myself), and it is named in his honor. Do a Google search on "Ladd Observatory!" I have some artifacts going all the way back to the Ladd family, and much additional background information on file at home. I look forward to digging this out and sending you more information and references. I even have a large family tree, which came down through my grandmothjer Sophia, as I recall. My family came from the East, VA I belief. Don't know much about years ago...Mostly settled in and around Putnam Co.,Ohio(Cloverdale).Grandfather was John,father was Melvin.Ever hear of this klan ??? Thanks for your website info. H. R. Ladd formerly of Delphos, Ohio now reside in Ft. Wayne, IN
