Don't forget the big chair at the front of the
furniture warehouse behind Northway Mall and
playing miniature golf next to Howard Johnsons
on rt.7, then getting fried clams @Hojo's....

Hey Greg! I moved away from Albany about 14 years ago and love living in Callifornia now but I grew up there and still visit family and friends frequently. Your list totally rocks--nice work!! Made me miss home!

Hi. Hey, before there was Colonie Center and Northway Mall, there was DOwntown with Meyers, Witney's, D'Jimas and Mr. Charles. Freihoffer used to deliver. You could call in an order and get it the next day. The "Plain Coffee Cake" was YUM. Albany High's rival was Schuyler High School. THE place for sandwiches was Joe's Delicatessan with famous Russian dressing (now Michael's on Madison Avenue). The Palace was a movie theater (one show at a time, thank you.) Bogarts was YEZZI's for a million years. At VI High School, upper classmen told freshman about the pool on the roof (none, of course). Everyone got sneaks (Converse) at Johnny Evers and school uniforms at Rosen''s on Central Avenue. Unfortunately, the town up Rt. 9 was known in Awlbuhnee as "Lathams." (uuuggghhh) The Y was the current Steuben Club. In the 70s, Tons of kids went to Ben Becker's Camp Nassau. Everybody's favorite local bands were 40,000 Headsmen and Rutland Road.
Food was bought at The A&P, or maybe the Traading Port. Either was no larger than most modern convenience stores. Central Ave was called "The Avenue." THe pizza places were Antonio's on Madison Ave and Domenico's on Delaware Ave. Also famous was "Three S's" pizza.
Bunches of kids had jobs at the beer canneries (gone), the billiard factory (gone), and Grand Union. (Oh, I forgot Grand Union in the grocery section.)
You know you're from Albany when you know stuff like that, even if you're not old enough to remember.
Have fun developing your Albany site.
