Expo to empower OFW and SME families slated at the PTTC. MANILA -- An exposition aimed at empowering the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) as well as their families through information, opportunities and benefits is slated at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City on June 27 to 29, 2003, it was announced yesterday by the Pamilyang OFWs-SMEs Network Foundation, Inc. (POFW-SMENFI). POFW-SMENFI President George Arriola said the event is the second Philippine one-stop-shop exhibit and conference for the OFW and SME families. The POFW-SMENFI holds office at No. 53 18th Avenue, Murphy, Cubao, Quezon City with tel. no. 912-58-03 and 437-16-60 and e-mail address: gearcom@philonline.com. Arriola said the expo is in support of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s concern for the welfare and benefit of the country’s eight million plus OFWs and their families as well as in response to the government’s efforts to support the development of SMEs. The OFWs or “modern-day heroes,” who remitted $8 billion plus annually to their families here, contributed to our country’s economic growth and sustainable development. On the other hand, the SMEs or “engines of economy” continue to provide the much-needed boost to our economy. Despite the prevailing economic slowdown worldwide, the SMEs continue to provide jobs and create wealth. Arriola said with the expo’s theme “OFW and SME Families Gear Up for the Global Market,” the thrust of the event is to provide the OFW and SME families with vital information on the various job, livelihood, investment and business opportunities being offered by the government and private sectors. Statistics from the National Statistics Office revealed that the remittances from OFWs is not only the driving force behind consumer spending but it also spurred the development of micro-businesses that now account for over 90 percent of all businesses in the country.
