My mother (78) and older sister (50)both have this blood disorder, which results in these spots on the skin. They both developed it around age 40. I'll be 43 soon and have not developed it so far. My sister, and now my mother, have been going for some sort of laser treatments for a few years. It's not a cure, but the spots do go away after a several weeks, by zapping the spots with the laser. The spots will get red and blotchy for a few weeks, but they go away... no scarring or other signs that they were even there. They have the treatments in the fall and winter, since their bodies are mostly covered up by longsleeves/pants. By summer, there's no trace of the spots on my sister. My mother has many, many more and has only started treatment in the past year or so.
The treatment is not covered by their insurance (ofcourse!), but they feel better about having this, so far, incurable condition.
My mother doesn't not know of anyone in her family who had this condition. Her dermatologist diagnosed it correctly, about 40 years ago! Ofcourse, people were more conservative in their dress and people didn't worship the sun, as many of us do know, so the spots may never have developed or been seen.

HAS ANYONE TRIED SKIN ZINC (800-867-6504) OR ANY OF THE OTHER ZINC LOTIONS
FOR TREATMENT OF PSORIASIS. I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN HEARING ADVERTISEMENTS FOR
THE SKIN ZINC ON LOCAL RADIO STATIONS.
I ALSO CHECKED THE INTERNET FOR OTHERS.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THEY ARE WORTH TRYING. THANK YOU FOR THIS WEB SITE!

Thanks so much for a great website. My experience with treatments has mirrored yours with no success. I notice that the condition appears to be most noticeable when I am stressed and/or after running. I continue to hope for something more effective, have been told by numerous dermatologists to not get my hopes too high since it is not a life threatening or very common skin disorder so it receives minimal attention. I have also tried a chemical peel with no difference, am going to try it one more time on a small area at a higher potency.

Unfortunately, I don't have any information about the questions you've made but, as a DSAP patient I'm desperate to find a solution to my problem. I'm really sad and upset with my condition.

Hi Carl. I think your website is great as I have had DSAP since I was an early teenager and am now 31. I have never been able to find much information on this condition including nothing web-based in Australia. I've tried many treatments recommended from local GP's and dermatologists with no success. Just to pass on some positive information I have been going to a Homeopath in Sydney for the last 3 years with some promising signs. Despite the fact that they don't ever disappear the redness can be significantly reduced. When treatment seems ineffective I consult the homeopath who then changes the potency of the remedy hopefully improving results again. This has been by far the best treatment for controlling this condition. Thanks again for this website its great to know their other people out there with this condition. I will keep monitoring however if you wish to contact me with any questions or ideas please feel free to do so.

To the person above (who's email address doesn't exist): You're lucky that at least the 2nd doctor knew it was DSAP. But I don't know why he would prescribe efudex. I would totally avoid the fluorouracil. It's designed for actinic keratosis... not DSAP, which grows slower and therefore won't absorb the medication. It will probably only cause you mental aggravation by making the spots redder.
