Hello Helen Midgley, I sore you on this T.V Program, Medical Incrediable and had to post, but couldn't use the email function,so hope this works. I know the effect of the white tailed spider bites, as I have seen them for myself, as we have one possilbily two or three types of white tailed spiders here in New Zealand. The (Narcrosis) rotting of the skin and flesh is different for each person who gets bitten, with some have no effects at all, to you have full ongoing problems. I also know there is no anti vemon to the bite and you can only treat symptoms. I do have ever know Medical Grade Manuka Honey commonly from Leptospermum scoparium and a few other New Zealand Tea Trees, has been used effectively to treat the infection caused by the bite, Skin and flesh rotting etc, due to it's superior antibacterial and Healing activities. I don't know weather this is a cure and more research would have to be done, but it's a start. On the other hand, keep up the great work, and hopefully a anti venom for the many types of white tailed spiders can be found

In december 2004 whilst travelling in NZ I woke one morning to find a very painful biteon my leg. I assumed I had had a reaction to a mosquito bite so ignored it, until the front of my leg became extremeley painful, and where the bite was on the back of the thigh became very pussy. I went to a pharmacist who said it was a whitetail bite, but that I should be okay if I didn't go to the dr. When it became too painful a dr put me on antibiotics. The scar on my leg still irritates me and i get small spots around the scar. My blood pressure has also been high since the bite. the dr here has suggested an ultrasound on the bite to look for infection. Has anyone else had this done? Is it worth it?
