Dear Helen and other guest book writers.
Thanks for the information contained in
this much needed site. I can identify with most victims but have a question.
I was bitten last January 2004 whilst
seated on outdoor furniture & wearing wide legged shorts and watching a bushfire at night.A friend asked for the binoculars so I leant over with them
then sat back and crossed my legs-Zap.
It wasn't that bad as bites go until I went to the bathroom and a white tailed
spider fell out of my undies, squished.
Horrified, I flushed the darn thing down the loo as I knew it's capabilities
from my cat having been bitten some years before up in Karratha. She required a number of skin grafts over a 1 year period. I was unwell for 3 days
then tried to forget about it until I found a lump at the bite site.It was angry reddish/purple and quite raised.
I have to say it was more uncomfortable than painful & awkward, being right on the knicker elastic line.I applied some
Magnoplasm to a gauze pad & taped it over the bite.Next morning when I removed this, the lesion bled profusely.
After swabbing it with Betadine,I was clearly able to see the two fang marks
and regretted disposing of the spider.
Following this I had a vague illness
involving high temperatures & nausea.
I was given a steroid ointment for the bite & took antihistamines of my own accord.Next, I experienced multiple joint pains which was called Polyarthralgia after the GP referred me to a Physician.Blood tests confirmed the
presence of Serum Sickness,allegedly
from the protein in the bacteria on the spider's fangs.I was given a 35 day course of Prednisolone (Steroid). Most of the joint pains settled with the exception of my right knee which is directly below the bite on my (R) upper thigh. X-Rays in March show nothing.
Follow up X-rays,Ultra Sounds and MRI
Scan show the knee joint to be now in a
collapsed state & deteriorating rapidly.
I had an arthroscopy 3 weeks ago and was told I need a replacement knee due to soft tissue destruction and necrosis.
5 fragments of bone were removed also.
The previous aspirates from this knee
show leococytes and polymorphs along with blood & an acute inflammatory process. Likewise, biopsies taken at the arthroscopy indicate an inflammatory
process in situ along with soft tissue destruction.I feel complete excision of the knee is a bit drastic but am at my wit's end painwise and almost totally
disabled nowadays.I have needed a brace
just to bear weight on this knee and can only walk 15 steps before pain stops me. I also cannot drive, it being my right leg.Medication was upgraded to morphia some 2 months ago but I'm most reluctant to take it and rely on Codalgin Forte just to get through each day. The spider bite just sits there.
It will not heal after 7 months of various treatments, however,it is not painful, just an irritant.A portion of broken off fang came out of it in June.
My question and main fear is this ...
Could the rapid destruction of my knee
joint be attributed to this bite ?
Only the GP knows the whole story, the surgeons know little if anything re the
capabilities of this horrid spider, from Hell, as one correspondent so aptly described it. We have had the entire house and outside fumigated since the bite and our pest control man recommended Baygon DYI Insect Bombs every 3 months ,which we have done.
Prior to the bite I had killed 4 of the beasts indoors.Since the bite, 8 of our friends in the Hills Districts have found White Tailed spiders in their houses too. Also, I was told I'm the 4th
this year needing hospitalisation at just the one hospital, but I am unable to find anyone who has had severe joint problems since being bitten.I hope this helps someone else. Thank you, please email me if disintegrating joints are
your problem,post bite. Glen.
