The Elvies Porthcawl Elvis Festival rocked!
The second Porthcawl Elvis Festival in 2005 was a great success thanks to fantastic performances from some of the world's top tribute artists.
It featured Kraig Parker and the Royal Tribute Band from Dallas, the legendary Sweet Inspirations, Martin Elvis from Malta, Jerry Presley from Memphis, Emerald Elvis Mark Lean , Stars in Their Eyes winner Gordon Hendricks, Mario Kombou fresh from London's West End, Leigh 'GI' Casling, Colbert Hamilton, MT Knight, Dale Corcoran from Ontario (via Norwich), Welsh Elvis winner Dave Smith, Marc George, Andrew Morgan, Mark Adey and our very own discovery, the brilliant teenager, 'Jelvis' from Swansea.
Compere of the Pavilion shows was none other than Charles Stone, Elvis's tour organiser for eight years. He was particularly impressed with newcomers The Paul Black Graceland Tribute Band from Merthyr.
The Festival featured over 80 shows throughout the weekend in venues all over the normally sleepy seaside resort, making it Europe's biggest such event. There was even a performance from a quadrille of horses dancing to Elvis on the beach ! As has become customary, there was even an Elvis style wedding on the Esplanade, the lucky couple and their guests arriving in a fleet of classic American cars and Porthcawl's famous Road Train (thanks Phil), escorted by a Humvee and thirty Harleys.
The Festival kicked off with a ripping show by Colbert at The Heartbreak Hotel and there was great music right through until the early hours of Monday morning. The whole weekend was filmed, and HTV are broadcasting a half hour special later this year.
Well done to Peter and Steve who put it all together with the help of their dedicated Team - Leighton, Nadine, Mandy, Sue, Sara, Bob, Pete, Linda, Sian, Ken and Scotty.
This year's Festival will be taking place 29th September thro to the early hours of 2nd October, and we're currently putting together this year's line-up. Details of what we have in store for you lucky people will be announced at www.elvies.co.uk.
Already lined up is the world premiere of a new musical experience 'The Elvis Presley Story', based on the hugely successful West End show 'Jailhouse Rock', under the directorship of Dave McKay and featuring its star, Mario Kombou and most of the original cast. Also appearing will be Nashville songstress Wanda Kay with her songwriter partner Billy Arr.
As the many thousands of visitors to Porthcawl Elvis Festival so far will tell you - there's no better place to be than here !
