Nice site. Knew the 617 guys via Leonard Cheshire.
Dave Shannon was a great guy, bit bossy but very
organised! "There's only one reason we survived the
war,"said his crew, "and that reason's name is David
Shannon. Bossy bugger, but a brilliant pilot. Drank
like a man too!" Dave was managing an Interflora
flower shop for Cheshire, up in north London. He
was so good he doubled the income for ALL
Interflora shops in Britain, and with Anne, trebled
the income for his own shop. A pro in the air and a
pro on the ground. "I HATE flowers!" he would roar,
"I'm NEVER going to look at another flower in my
life after I retire!" He actually wanted to bat for The
Aussie Eleven in the Ashes, but the war got in the
way. "Beating the Germans didn't give me the
satisfaction THRASHING the Pom Eleven would have
done, but it was better than nothing." Cheshire
grinned at him.

I have an 1897 Lee Enfield Mk1 .303 which saw service with my grandfather in the Boer war from 1900 to 1902. Can you provide info on this particular weapon as to it's history, type of bayonet and an approx. valuation. It is in good working order and has my grandfathers name, unit, site of service and relevant years engraved in the butt. It is not only in working condition as I take it out to prove every so often but the general condition is excellent. I have a bayonet which fits but I don't know if it is the one that was originally manufactured for this weapon as there is nowhere I can find to match the manufacturers markings.

Gentlemen,
Always a pleasure to read about our stalwart brothers-in-arms from so long ago.
Not near enough has been done to impress on Americas your contributions in South Vietnam.
It was a distinct pleasure to buy a round (or three) when CWO Keith Payne attended a function here in 2002.
In comradeship...
Semper Fidelis,

Great site. I served with the 1 ATF as a USAF
Forward Air Controller (JADE 08) from July 69 to
June 70. I have many memories of working with
armored columns and the great Australian soldiers
from that time.
Thanks for the memories and the beer....
