To the heroes of the 39th battalion, your sacrifice saved Australia. You believed you were fighting to protect Australia from the Japanese. This is only partly correct.By slowing the advance you effectively stopped the completion of another plan that would have seen the genocide of a large number of your countrymen by someone you least expected. If this sounds strange you should research into operations and tunneling that were underway in Australia prior to the war.Someone knew well in advance that the war would be coming to Australia and preparations were well in place by the outbreak.Certain elements of our allies were involved in this.

When I was an apprentice in the 50s, my tech
instructor was Lionel "Mick" Christensen, DFM, who
served in Wellingtons (at discharge 1481 BG FLT ).
Mick was the among the last of the "Sergeant
Pilots". He was a good man and I still think of him
often and fondly. Any of his descendants can
contact me about his "Tech Instructor" days.

Lived in Australia for 43 yrs, always telling Australians about the hospital, St Marys & the Memorial Cemetery. We were married there in 1963. There was a Video made of the ANZAC day service at St Mary's some years ago, we have a copy. Few Australians are aware of the site and the hospital's history. Stopped there again in 2006, it is kept so lovely. Do the school children still take flowers to the graves on ANZAC day, hope so.
