I have spoken with Margaret Tryon Rowell's cousin and she has a copy of Margaret's will (including 2 codicils). These documents were signed in June and July 1975, just prior to Margaret's death. Some of the facts you have stated are incorrect and she has the documentation to prove it. None of Margaret's brothers were executors of her estate. The only Tryon involved was Mary Tryon (Albert's wife, Margaret's sister-in-law) and according to the executors and lawyer was only there to appease the Tryon family. Margaret's brother, Rollin Tryon was appointed Trustee over 5 trusts - Paige Hall, Desiree Elizabeth Beauregard, and Leon Gary Beauregard. Each trust contained $10,000.00 and was to be used for health, care, maintenance and education; any assets left were to be dispursed upon their reaching the age of 25. Rollin was also trustee over trusts for his brother's Orville and Lawrence. Each of Harry's brothers and sisters received 25,000.00. In Margaret's will their is a stipulation that "if any beneficiary under this will in any manner, directly or indirectly, contests or attacks this will or any of its provisions, any share or interest in my estate given to that contesting beneficiary under this will is revoked and shall be disposed of in the same manner provided herein as if that contesting beneficiary had predeceased me without issue." This is taken from her will and includes any and all heirs - not just Harry and Bertha's descendants! As to the Rodeo grounds now owned by HARD. Margaret's will makes a specfic request that Arnold Anderson is to appraise the property and I (Margaret) hereby give and bequeath one-half (1/2) of the value of said appraisal to the Hayward Area Recreation District only on the condition that they maintain the area for public park purposes and for use and encouragement of the Rodeo and as a main use, use the facility once a year for the Annual Hayward Rodeo and once a year for the Junior Rodeo. The Rodeo grounds were appraised for $295,000.00 and were sold to HARD for half that amount. Margaret also states that the executors shall work with the Park District and the Hayward Area Historical Society to gather and preserve those items of historical significance for proper preservation and display that may be among the articles that belonged to Harry and myself and are part of this estate. I would ask any beneficiary of this will to also cooperate in seeing that this result is achieved. There is nothing STATED in Margaret's will about a 99 year lease with HARD. The Tryon Family hired Curtis Darling of Bakersfield to represent their interests. Mr. Darling made at least 2 and maybe 3 appearances in court on behalf of the Tryon Family. The estate was ordered closed in 1983. The Judge ordered the executors paid with the only liquid assets available. After the executors were paid, the only assets left were the Rowell Ranch Homestead and the Redwood Road Development Co. note. A deposit to the State of California for inheritance taxes was paid June 10, 1976 in the amount of $60,000.00. This proved not to be enough and the heirs were left with a $240,000.00 - $220,000.00 debt to the State of California. Penalties and interest accrued at the rate of $47.00 a day and in order to pay this debt off - the heirs discounted the note to the Redwood Road Development Co. and were finally free and clear of the State of California. The Federal taxes paid amounted to $415,838.47. After approximately 7 different contracts the Rowell Ranch was sold to Marie Cronin.
Margaret's niece wants you to know that she was at Camp Bertha on August 13, 1953. That her Aunt Margaret, Margaret's sister Persis, her Grandmother and her mother all worked very hard feeding and taking care of approximately 50 hunters. The upper and lower ranchs were always very busy and there was never a dull moment. She remembers being at the ranch for Christmas when Uncle Harry had Elizabeth brought by ambulance. She even showed me a picture of Elizabeth in the living room. Margaret's niece wnats you to know that Margaret M. Tryon Rowell was born and raised on a farm in Michigan City, Indiana. Anyone who knows Margaret "Maggie" knows she was a hard worker and took very good care of Uncle Harry.

Marianne,
Have you seen the new website? www.peteknight.net
I am also trying to find out some details on Pete's reinterment at Hot Springs from Hayward. I have heard that Harry paid for the expenses for that as well. Do you know the date? I know it was in 1960. Going to Hot Springs to the Historical Society tomorrow. I have seen the article on the ceremony. It mentions several names, none of whom are familar to me. Well I'll ttyl

My grandfather is Oliver Franklin Rowell. He has four sons (by two wives) Oliver Jerry Rowell, Danny Rowell, Jimmy Wayne Rowell and Richard Weldon Rowell. Would that make me any relation to Rowell Ranch founders and descendants?

My boyfriend, Pete, and I love watching the rodeo events on TV. Especially the bull riding. We have never however seen them in person. Why I don't know. I'm sure we will in the future. I have always lived the "city" life and think the life on a real ranch would be very exciting. Thanks for your website. I loved it.
