Pauline had the gift of -- how would Suzanne White put it? -- "dropping acerbic comments as though they were rose petals." Like most critics confident of their judgments, she had the ability to rub people the wrong way by just being herself. In a world where being oneself can be the hardest thing to do sometimes, she should be commended and remembered fondly.
