I am a 44 year old Native American of the Navajo Tribe. I know that there has always been conflict between the Hopi and the Navajo, but with the current events regarding Ms. Piestewa, our cultures has been able to surpass the smallness of these long-term events. But, most of all, the nation has come to surround one of our fallen...setting aside their troubles and conflicts for the sake of her children. My heart flies to the heavens in order to catch a glimpse of our Native sister Lori Ann Piestewa. Not knowing that she was to become a symbol of pride for her Native brethren and the world, this lone warrior carried out her duties to the fullest... and then gave of herself back to Mother Earth. With this one selfless act, we, as a combined Native entity are left to comfort, console and raise her offspring. We are all a product of our society, but when we are able to make our own decisions, it is left to us to follow that path. And, with the right guidance given to us by our family and elders...we will have made the right decisions. Under the direct supervision of Ms. Piestewa's family...they are left with that enormous task. I know they will instill in her children the responsibilty and pride that comes with being a child of a famous warrior. They will come to understand and appreciate the beautiful person that was chosen to be their mother. I wish them both the love that I would extend if they were my own children, but I am only a lone voice. We are all left to make a mark on Mother Earth... but only a few of the chosen are able to carry out that heavy burden. My love and prayers to the Piestewa Family, and I am consoled in the fact that Lori Ann will oversee the future of her children...wherever she may be flying.
