thank you so much for your participation in "the dark knight". there were many moments in the film that thrilled me, but the moment i heard the pipes and drums was the one moment that sent shivers down my spine and stirred that something in my heart that nearly brings me to tears. your contribution to the film will be something i make note of every time i see it and made it even more amazing. i hope that i am privileged to hear your playing on the soundtrack as well. you all were fantastic and i don't think enough credit is given to your moving contribution. blessed be.

In the process of doing geneology research for my family I discovered the memorial for my great-uncle, George Neil. I knew my grandmother had a brother who was a Chicago Police Officer but I had no idea that he was killed in the line of duty. I am so proud but it must have been so sad for my family. Thank you for all the pictures. When I visit Chicago again I will pay tribute to his grave. Thank you!

The responsibility of what music is played, who or how many play it, when it is played, or how it is to be played is solely the province of the Pipe Major of any band. The Drum Major assembles, inspects, moves and arranges the band formations while on the march or while performing. He calls the tunes as selected and directed by the Pipe Major; gives the appropriate cuttofs, salutes ect. for the entire formation. In a Mass Band situation, it is considered proper etiquette for the various Pipe Majors to confer and decide what will be played, how many and who will play it and when. It is also proper for the Senior Pipe Major to assume the leadership, unless there be a Champion Pipe Major among them, who then might be accorded deference and granted the lead. It is all usually done on a consensus basis, according to the above guidelines. There may be rare exceptions, but in 24yrs of this, I have seen none. Whether any solo is played and who will play it is solely the decision of the Senior Pipe Major. Likewise, in Mass Band situations, the Drum Majors confer on what the Mass Band formation will be and the placement of the bands. The Senior Drum Major takes the lead over the whole formation in the execution of his duties, which includes ensuring that there is room made available for each band performing, as was done on St. Jude Sunday. The problem of having only ten people out a bus load performiong, is something that has to be sorted out by the respective Band Managers and Pipe Majors along with the respective event organizers. The problem of two pipes out of tune to each other has several solutions. Common sense, my ears, and my experience as former Pipe Major tell me that if you are going to play together, you MUST tune together. But, unless directed otherwise, you must first inquire IF you are playing. "when we ASSUME........." Unfortunately, that's what happened. EK
